Since 1847, The Coach and Horses has served the communities of Danehill
and Chelwood Gate. First as an Ale house but now as a country pub and
restaurant, serving award winning food alongside traditional pub
classics. The traditional pub bars remain and are busy, not only, with
locals but new faces lucky enough to have discovered the charm and
quality of this Sussex pub on the edge of the Ashdown forest.
A magnificent maple tree dominates the sunny "adult only" terrace at the
rear of the pub, whilst peaceful front gardens boast views of the South
Downs.
Although the food obviously plays an important role in the pub's
success, the atmosphere of the bar still thrives, offering the beer
drinker weekly changing guest ales as well as some ten or so wines,
sparkling wines and champagne by the glass. The carefully selected main
wine list is packed with variety and quality.
Wherever possible, the raw ingredients of each dish is locally sourced.
Lamb and soft fruits come from Danehill - veal, beef, venison, seasonal
vegetables, wild mushrooms, eggs, pheasant, duck and rabbit come from
neighbouring villages and the fish is from Seaford Bay.
A light lunch menu is available in the day and a selection of pub
classics are prepared for both lunch and dinner.
The combination of fine ingredients and a team of talented chefs have
resulted in a great deal of recognition. Amongst many awards, The Coach
and Horses is still the only pub in Sussex to be awarded a "Michelin Bib
Gourmand" for six consecutive years.
In the unique “language” of the Michelin Guide, the Bib symbols indicate
the inspectors’ favourite establishments, offering high-quality products
and services and good value for the money. The Michelin Guide Great
Britain & Ireland 2010 includes only 131 Bib Gourmand restaurants of
which there only 8 in Sussex.

Horses proves that some classic hostelries can survive in any climate"
